What do you get when two powerhouse fashionistas join forces? barlow.lehman, created by Chicago style mavens Annie Barlow and Mary Liz Lehman, is a personal consulting service that helps both women and men find their individual style.

Along with personal shopping services, the pair offers in-home closet consultations, personalized lookbooks, remote wardrobe consulting and more.

Whether you typically wear styles in bright, bold colors or  understated pieces in monochromatic tones, these ladies can use their collective 30 years experience in fashion, styling and retail to find you the perfect fit.

So, where do I sign up?

As we make the transition from boozy lemonade and patio dining, Chicago’s fashion scene is more vibrant than ever. With the opening of CH by Carolina Herrera on the horizon, along with Tom Ford, Saint Laurent and Lanvin, Chicago is quickly becoming a top shopping destination.

HS: How would you describe Chicago’s fashion scene?
AB and MLL:
Understated. Relaxed and comfortable. A great mix of high/low.

HS: What are three fall essentials for the ladies & gents of Chicago?
AB and MLL:
There are really three things. First, in Chicago you must have amazing outerwear since we can expect to wear it 4-6 months of the year!  You no longer have to choose between substance and style. For women, we love Mackage (at Perchance) and there is an amazing option at Space 519 right now that is taffeta with down (so luxe and practical).  For men, go to the Moncler or North Face store for something attractive and comfortable.

Secondly, you should invest in a blazer or dress with a classic fabrication – like houndstooth or plaid.  Pick something with leather details to keep it cool or something more feminine to balance the menswear influence. For men, look at Polo for a great plaid sport coat, as they are both timeless.

Finally, fall and winter in Chicago means boots, boots, boots.  We love Loeffler Randall boots as well as smart weatherproof boots from Aquatalia and La Canadienne.

HS: It’s a little cliche to ask, but what is the best thing about your job?
AB and MLL:
That is an easy one. Making people feel great about themselves.

HS: As stylists, you must see women who could use your help all the time. Are there any fashion crimes that drive you crazy?
AB and MLL:
Yes, In particular, there are two things. First, athletic gear should be saved for when you are actually working out.  If you are coming from or on the way way to a workout, women can throw on a pair of ballet flats and scarf or long open cardican to cover your tush.

The second thing happens when people are under dressed for the office. We tell people they should dress for the job they WANT not the job they have—take time to  pull yourself together in the morning and feel great all day with the clothes you have on. People will respect you more and you will too!

HS: What is your favorite find in Chicago?
AB and MLL: Floriole (webster and racine) is our favorite bakery and café.  Love their quiche & pastries as well as delicious coffee and amazing lunch menu items. We also love the burger at Bistro Zinc, tacos at Big Star and Beatrix for day time meetings and the best cookies!
